About the Artist:
Philip Beaumont, Jr.
"For the last few years I've concentrated on learning to carve sedimentary and metamorphic stone. Although sometimes initially frustrating, these stones allow me to provide the detail and finish that I want. My greatest longing is to portray my subjects in a respectful and positive manner. I want to present our indigenous ways and values in a positive light." Philip Beaumont Jr., enrolled member of the Crow Nation was born on January 16, 1947 in Lawrence, Kansas. He earned a B.A. Degree in Extended Art from Eastern Montana College in 1976, and went on to earn a Masters of Arts Degree in American Indian Studies in 1991. Beaumont's interest in art began during his sophomore year at Eastern Montana College when he enrolled in an oil and watercolor class. Prior to this class he had never taken a single art lesson. It was this class that marked the beginning of Beaumont's career as an artist. By the time Beaumont graduated from Eastern Montana College, he realized that he wanted to share his knowledge of art with others and become a teacher. Beaumont began teaching high school art classes in 1982 at the Two Eagle River School in Dixon, Montana. In 1984, he taught junior high art classes at the Santa Fe Indian School. In 1991, he worked as a teacher with the Vision Quest Program in Tucson, Arizona, a program devoted to changing the lives of young adolescents often in trouble with the law. Beaumont has devoted many years of his life to the education of Indian people, and firmly believes in preserving Native American values and traditions. Although Beaumont's profession is teaching, his true career is that of an artist. His sculptures reflect stories and traditions that were passed on to him from his Crow tribal ancestors. Therefore, each sculpture he creates carries a deep personal meaning. Beaumont currently teaches Native American Studies and Art Foundation at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, where he lives with his wife, Vivian. Beaumont has studios in both Calgary, Alberta and in Pryor, Montana.
