About the Artist:
Ed Spotted Eagle
"In my paintings I express my thoughts and memories from the spiritual guidance and knowledge that my parents passed on to me. I try to portray certain dreams for my people, and show that each world affects the other as the spirit world is combined with reality." Ed (Rain Holler) Spotted Eagle has always been interested in drawing, painting, and three-dimensional art. He has been drawing since he was a child. Ed was raised in a traditional southern Pikuni home, and his mother used to leave typing paper on the table so that he and his siblings would have something to draw on, rather than drawing on the walls in the house. In elementary school, Ed did pencil and ink drawings, and then in high school he began doing acrylic paintings on canvas. He has also experimented with oil paint and watercolor. Ed has not had any formal art training, but his mother had a lot of influence on him. She was an artist also, and did pencil drawings and beadwork. Ed brainstorms ideas for his paintings by participating in traditional sweatbaths and hiking through the mountains. Many of Ed's paintings portray messages that reflect his surroundings and his life. His paintings are meant to draw the viewer into the world of "Spotted Eagle's dreams". Along with painting, Ed sings with the "Spotted Eagle Singers", a well-known drum group on the Pow-Wow Circuit. Ed learned the art of traditional Indian singing from his father, and Ed, his brother, and uncle started this singing group. Ed (Rain Holler) Spotted Eagle, an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Tribe, was born in 1956 to Mary Sure Chief and Samuel (Big Road) Spotted Eagle. Ed was raised on the Blackfeet Reservation and attended public schools in Browning, Montana. Ed Spotted Eagle and his family reside in Browning, Montana.
